The Republic Act No. 9147, or the Wildlife Act, is a groundbreaking law in Philippine wildlife legislation, strengthening the country’s ability to manage, protect, and conserve wildlife resources and their habitats. It extends legal protection to all wildlife and empowers agencies with defined mandates for regulatory and enforcement functions. The law aims to:
• Conserve and protect wildlife species and their habitats to promote ecological balance and enhance biological diversity;
• Regulate the collection and trade of wildlife;
• Pursue, with due regard to national interest, the Philippines’ commitment to international conventions on wildlife protection and habitat conservation; and
• Initiate or support scientific studies on biodiversity conservation.

This policy provides procedures and requirements on how to collect biological resources for scientific research and conservation breeding or propagation activities.  It also provides requirements and procedures for the commercial breeding or propagation of wildlife including exportation and importation of wildlife.
